The National Park Service celebrated their 100th birthday in 2016 but the origin of America’s parks goes all the way back to the Civil War and beyond. Author Russell Cahill thinks it started when a single tree was cut down in California in 1852. Cahill was a National Park Ranger during the 1960s and 70s and has written of the origins of our parks and his adventures in Yosemite, Alaska, Washington D.C. and Hawai’i. Join him and hear of rescues, forest fires, bears breaking into a five-star hotel and other happenings. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, remember some of the remarkable, but often unsung, women of the Pacific Northwest.
Writer Mayumi Tsutakawa presents five “woman warriors” in the arts and journalism whose inspiring stories reach back to the early years of our region. Meet the pioneering photographer Imogen Cunningham, Black American jazz musician Ruby Bishop, Chinese American artist Priscilla Chong Jue, Leftist journalist Anna Louise Strong, and Native American linguist Vi Hilbert. Drawing on her own experience as an activist and writer, she explores how these women inspired others and changed our state and our society.
Middle and high schoolers bring your guitar, voice, writing, or any other performance art to the library for an evening of creative sharing. The lights will be low, the coffee will be hot, and the mood will be chill. Come be a performer and wow your friends, or support your peers as an audience member. Sign up for a performance slot at the door when you arrive. Refreshments provided.
This event will be held after regular hours, no other library services will be available.
