Farm and Nursery Tour @ Burnt Ridge Nursery
Jul 22 all-day

Join us for a public Farm and Nursery Tour, with our founder Michael Dolan leading the way as we share with you our 20 acres of organic fruits and nuts, with a special focus on crops that ripen in the summer. Limit of 30 guests will be strictly enforced due to parking limitations; please carpool if you can. If you are purchasing a family ticket, please tell us the total number of family members attending in the note section of your order form. Out of courtesy to our farm dog, Ginger, please leave your furry friends, except service animals, at home or in your vehicle when you come to the tour.

There are 2 tour times scheduled/day. All of the event will be outside.

10:00am or 1:30pm: TOURING! The fun starts with a tour of our sloping farm site on our rugged trails – not easy access for strollers or those with limited mobility. We will be viewing all of our crop plants – hazelnuts, chestnuts, kiwis, mulberries, blueberries, figs and more. Cultivation and propagation techniques will be discussed, as well as the specific characteristics of the varieties that do well here in the Pacific Northwest.

11:00am or 2:30pm: EATING! We will have a sampling of the fruits at the peak of their ripeness, with a focus on flavor, texture and nutrition. Chef John Camenzind will provide a sample plate that will tickle your taste buds with quick and easy treats.

11:30am or 3:00pm: LEARNING! Michael will answer questions about any other crops that caught your eye during the tour.

Live potted plants, certified organic produce, preserved foods, wine and hard cider will be available to purchase and take home as the event winds to a close.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE !

Homelessness and the Meaning of Home @ Centralia Timberland Library Meeting Room

Homelessness and the Meaning of Home @ Centralia Timberland Library Meeting Room

Loss of a home, whether through financial difficulties, divorce, illness, or natural disasters like wildfires, is a widespread and growing problem affecting all of us. Often thought of as only an urban problem, homelessness also occurs in suburban and rural areas throughout Washington State. What are the historical roots of homelessness, and what lessons can we learn from them? What are the common meanings of home to us, and how can we apply those meanings to our responses to homelessness in our communities?

In this talk, author and professor Josephine Ensign leads audiences through a values clarification exercise that includes individual writing time. Professor Ensign will share her research on the history of homelessness in her hometown of Seattle, along with discussion of what these stories can teach us about the contemporary crisis of homelessness throughout our state and country.

Josephine Ensign (she/her) is a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her scholarship and practice as a nurse practitioner focus on trauma-informed care and health inequities for people marginalized by poverty and homelessness. She experienced homelessness herself as a young adult. Ensign is the author of several books including Skid Road: On the Frontier of Health and Homelessness in an American City, a 2022 finalist for the Washington State Book Award. Her latest book, Way Home: Ways Out of Homelessness, is forthcoming from Johns Hopkins University Press.

Ensign lives in Seattle.
