Dr. Michael Lundborg is looking forward to joining Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates and bringing his expertise in foot health from years of top-notch training. While attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, Dr. Lundborg was interested in a medical career but hadn’t decided on a specialty until he took a bio-mechanics course. He became fascinated by how foot health is so crucial to our overall well-being.

“My mom is a nurse and she was able to connect me with some different types of physicians to shadow,” says Dr. Lundborg. “When I shadowed a local Podiatrist, I was amazed at the variety of patient problems they are trained to address.”

Dr. Lundborg attended the Temple University of Podiatry and did his residency in Boston at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. “My training at Beth Israel was affiliated with Harvard University,” he explains. “I was able to get amazing training as well as teach many Harvard students.”

Dr. Lundborg has been involved in many complicated surgeries and has extensive reconstruction experience. For example, Charcot foot is a side effect of uncontrolled diabetes. Significant nerve damage can cause the bones to weaken and ultimately fracture. Most podiatrists see only one or two of these a year but Dr. Lundborg corrected three to four each month at Beth Israel. He has experience in diabetic wound care, forefoot and bunion procedures, trauma and reconstruction. He has a special interest in flatfoot and cavus reconstructive surgery, trauma, sports medicine, biomechanics and diabetic foot ulcers.

“My final year of medical school, I did a month-long externship at Swedish Hospital in Seattle,” Dr. Lundborg shares. The weather was perfect and he never forgot the beauty of the Northwest. A float plane trip highlighting the Puget Sound and lakes of the region cemented his decision to look for employment in the area.

Dr. Lundborg interviewed with several practices, but when he met Dr. Terry Hess and his team, he knew he had found his future home. “When I met with Dr. Hess and the staff, I felt immediately connected,” he explains. “I believe in a patient-centered approach and treat my patients the same way I would treat someone in my own family.” At Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates, staff is family and Dr. Lundborg felt that comfort immediately.

Dr. Terry Hess felt it was important to add a provider who had vast experience and would fit into their patient-oriented practice. Dr. Lundborg fit the bill perfectly.

Dr. Lundborg and his wife Elizabeth are moving to downtown Olympia with their Yorkie puppy, Basil. “We are looking forward to getting to know Olympia and the surrounding areas,” Dr. Lundborg shares. The couple love to hike and are excited to explore the abundant trails of our region. “I am looking forward to a slower pace of life than I have found in the other places I’ve lived,” he adds.
