2022 has been a great year for the small nonprofit organization based in Chehalis, growing in staff size and really digging deep into their mission: building community health through the use of herbal medicine, sustainable food cultivation and empowering education. NNF’s apothecary, located at 176 NE School St. in Chehalis, has become a hub for community members seeking herbal medicine, resources or information about school gardens, herbal remedies, naturopathic medicine, nutrition, local support services, and more. The office is also a retail space, where the community can come in and purchase teas, bulk herbs, supplements, homemade salves, essential oils, digestive bitters, herbal tinctures, organic makeup, soaps, hydrosols, local artwork, and books.

Project: Food is Medicine, an initiative started by Nature Nurture Farmacy in 2020, has received an Americorps VISTA Member to coordinate the project over the next year. The lack of agricultural resources, nutritional education, and local farmer connections has left our Lewis County community dependent on external resources for food. Project: Food is Medicine is aimed at closing the resource gaps for families and individuals experiencing food insecurity in several ways. Through increased local community-supported agriculture (CSA) opportunities, supporting local school gardens (in particular, the Toledo Learning Garden at Toledo Elementary School, and Winlock Community Garden at Winlock High), operating a free Community Seed Library located in the apothecary, and many other programs, Nature Nurture Farmacy is working to make healthy lifestyles for all as accessible as possible.

“We decided to take part in this year’s GivingTuesday to firstly garner support, but mainly to share our mission and showcase all the ways that Nature Nurture Farmacy is empowering and uplifting our Lewis County community,” says Mari, Americorps VISTA, Project: Food is Medicine Coordinator and GivingTuesday Campaign Leader.

People demonstrate generosity in many ways on GivingTuesday. Whether it’s helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving to causes we care about, every act of generosity counts. “GivingTuesday inspires people all around the world to embrace their power to drive progress around the causes they care about, not just on one day but throughout the year,” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s CEO, and co-founder.

Nature Nurture Farmacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community wellness organization founded in 2019 by Dr. Alicia Spalding. We serve Lewis County by making naturopathic medicine, herbalism, and nutritional education available and accessible to all. NNF empowers the community in their health journey, through education on healthy living, growing food and medicine and creating herbal remedies, all while focusing on sustainability and disease prevention. With a commitment to the community as our core focus, we host inexpensive and engaging nutrition and health classes, collaborate with local farmers, growers, and social service organizations to improve access to fresh produce, and serve as a resource hub for low-income community members and those facing financial, physical, emotional or mental hardships.
