By the end of this video, everyone will be asking: “Who are the speakers for the upcoming Chehalis Flying Saucer Party happening on September 13 and 14?” It’s a closely guarded secret known only to the Mayor of Chehalis and a few other festival organizers. They have plans to reveal the names on June 24, the 77th anniversary of a local UFO sighting that changed the face of American popular culture. In keeping with the concept of “UFO Secrecy” the theme for this year’s festival is “UFO Disclosure.” Mayor Ketchum had some fun with this concept, starring in a satirical video that puts the Mayor right at the center of a local UFO conspiracy featuring a chaotic press conference, a hidden camera investigation, a clandestine back alley meeting, and much more!

The city of Chehalis, WA, honors its own place in UFO history as the birthplace of the term “Flying Saucer.” On June 24, 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold flew out of the Chehalis Airport in Lewis County and spotted nine unidentified flying objects over Mt. Rainier. Later when asked how these objects flew, Arnold said that they moved through the air like saucers skipping over the water. Soon after, his description was distorted by the press, putting not only “flying saucers” on the national radar but also kickstarting the UFO craze of the 1950s!

Each September, the Chehalis Flying Saucer Party commemorates this piece of pop culture history with expert speakers, live music, vendors, a costume contest, a local film festival, and many more fun activities throughout Saturday. And this year, we’re adding an Alien Costume Parade leading up to the popular “Saucer Drop,” where kids of all ages can catch a flying saucer and win a prize!
