The Olympia School of Advanced Skincare, recently founded by local salon owner, esthetician and educator, Jin Mi S. Williams, is set to help students in the South Sound region prepare for a career in the beauty industry. With a beauty career spanning almost two decades, Williams has used her experience to develop a comprehensive curriculum while also helping to bolster Olympia’s small business community.
Olympia-Based Skincare School Helps To Prepare Students for a Growing Career Field
The beauty industry is a versatile and growing career market. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for skincare specialists are expected to increase 9% over the next decade, from 2022 to 2032. And for those seeking a beauty-related career, there are pathways at the Olympia School of Advanced Skincare to learn best practices for skincare treatments, hair removal and services for eyebrows and eyelashes.
Williams began her career on the East Coast. Her journey included being an apprentice for celebrity makeup artists Selena Miller and Leslie Christin while also becoming licensed in paramedical esthetics. Williams continued to build her career as a makeup artist within the film and television industry.
After moving to Olympia, Williams began a new career journey by offering lash extensions from her home salon before expanding to a new location. Williams’ salon, Miss Priss Lash and Brow, offers services like lash extensions, lash perms and tints, brow services, waxing, facials and other aesthetic treatments.
With a passion for education, Williams has also worked as an educator for top beauty brands as well as an instructor of beauty-related courses, helping estheticians to offer popular cosmetic services to their own clients. Williams is also the instructor for the Miss Priss Lash and Brow Academy, helping aspiring salon owners launch and operate their own businesses.
After seeing a demand for comprehensive aesthetic education in the Olympia region, Williams was inspired to open a skincare school that will provide training for students as they work toward a career as a licensed beauty professional.
Olympia School of Advanced Skincare Offers Student-Friendly Course Schedules
The Olympia School of Advanced Skincare will be an asset for students in the South Sound as they prepare for the esthetician or master esthetician board exams in Washington State. Students of the Olympia School of Advanced Skincare can choose a pathway toward Basic Esthetics, which includes 750 course hours or Master Esthetics for 1,200 course hours. Students of basic and master esthetics learn a range of topics that will be beneficial for safe, sanitary and effective skincare, hair removal and other cosmetic treatments.
Students of both tracks will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a classroom setting under the supervision of experienced instructors, including Master Estheticians Trina Novlan and Courtney Roberts. To help accommodate work or family schedules, the Olympia School of Advanced Skincare will offer class options during daytime and evening hours and through online modules so students can complete certain coursework on their own schedule.
Students can also take additional coursework to become certified in areas not required by the state board, including advanced lash extensions, lash and brow technique, permanent makeup, holistic skincare and advanced business practices. These additional courses may help students to become more competitive in their chosen career field or provide additional employment opportunities.
“In our curriculum, we will be offering what’s required by Washington State in order to be a master esthetician,” says Williams. “In addition to that, additional certifications that would make potential students more desirable amongst employers who are looking for people to be able to meet the demands of their clientele. Which obviously, with the popular lash extensions, prepares them for more job opportunities.”
At the Olympia School of Advanced Skincare, Students Can Learn and Stay Local
The Olympia School of Advanced Skincare could be a good fit for those just beginning their career, those who are hoping to make a career change or those hoping to enhance their career in the beauty industry. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Williams says she has noticed increased curiosity from community members about beauty-related careers and increased interest in exploring a career change into the beauty industry, where there may be potential for a flexible schedule and work-life balance.
“People want a little bit more time and freedom,” says Williams. “And they feel that if they can generate a certain amount of income providing services, that it would allow them more freedom to explore other areas of life that they want to connect to. Whether that’s connecting more to family or connecting more to the community, or just traveling or being able to feel inspired to be able to do those extra things that they’re passionate about.”
Through Olympia School of Advanced Skincare, Williams hopes that the South Sound can become a destination for beauty education. Williams says she doesn’t want local students to have to travel far away for quality aesthetic education, and she wants to retain future beauty professionals in the local region. Along the way, Williams also hopes she can help to bolster the beauty and small business communities in Olympia and is excited to see the school’s inaugural class begin their studies.
“I really want to bring business back into Olympia,” says Williams. “Show that Olympia is the capital of Washington, and there’s a lot of great businesses and organizations in and around Olympia.”
The official grand opening for the Olympia School for Advanced Skincare will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on October 20.
