It can be fun to watch history repeat itself. Trends circle back and your mother probably has a box of photos to prove it. In 1993 the top grossing movie was Jurassic Park. In 2018, we’re still enjoying the oversized, fast-paced, dino-franchise. Honda and Toyota top auto sales both years, and concertgoers of all ages can snag coveted tickets to Sir Mix-A-Lot belting out such hits as “Baby Got Back.”
On October 5 and 6, come indulge in everything automotive at Quinault Beach Resort and Casino’s annual Show ‘N Shine at the Shores car show. While there, make it a weekend to remember with tickets to see the iconic Sir Mix-A-Lot on Saturday night, October 6.
Show ’N Shine is sponsored by Pushrods of Hoquiam, local patron saints of street rodding and racing. They host events throughout Grays Harbor that sponsor college scholarships, high school programs, Meals on Wheels and domestic violence prevention.
Things kick off with a Poker Run at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 5. Here, participants explore the Ocean Shores area picking up markers from various businesses, restaurants and more. Winning poker hands can earn exciting rewards.
Saturday will be the full car show, along with vendors, food and drink specials, and more. Lance Lambert of the Vintage Vehicle Show will expertly emcee, handing out $3,000 in cash and prizes. Since the 1990s, his show has amassed fan-favorite status by visiting “America’s best car shows, museums, private collections and restoration facilities,” showcasing what they describe as “everything from house painted and chicken wired Cuban cars to multi-million dollar classics.”
Anyone with a hotrod can sign up to participate in Show ’N Shine. Preregistration is recommended—and will save you money on fees—but is not required. Goodie bags and dash plaques will be presented while supplies last and entry earns you tickets for prize drawings and raffles galore.
Attending the show is free. Then wander the beach, stop for a bite at one of QBRC’s many dining options or hit the casino floor.
Quinault Beach Resort and Casino offers entertainment all year round. They host what are often the region’s first and last car shows of each year, as well as maintaining a full event calendar. In October alone, they’ll feature Show N Shine, Sir Mix-A-Lot, the Lalas Burlesque Show and the ever popular Halloween Nightmare Ball.
After the car show wraps up, it’s time to put on your dancing shoes when Sir Mix-A-Lot takes the stage. In the years since his hit “Baby Got Back” was released, he hasn’t stopped rocking out with fans around the world.
“Many artists love to claim they knew they were writing a hit before they wrote lyric 1,” he explains. “Actually, I never expected ‘Baby Got Back’ to hit. Twenty-five years ago the climate was so different. Beauty was defined by magazines selling clothes nobody could afford. So, when I wrote BGB I assumed only likeminded people would listen. Who’d a thunk 25 years later…..”
And here we are, still clamoring for seats and ready to dance the night away. Tickets are $25 and are available online or at the door. Sir Mix-A-Lot is a self-proclaimed car guy which makes it the perfect end to a perfect weekend.
Like history, our days can slide into a repetitive blur once summer winds down. Treat yourself to an amazing weekend at Quinault Beach. Room Packages are still available at the Quinault Sweetgrass Hotel starting at two nights for $199. This includes a Friday and Saturday night stay, two tickets to Sir Mix-A-Lot and breakfast for two at Quinault Beach Resort & Casino.
After 25 years, many of us ruefully echo Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “who’d a thunk” mentality. Thankfully, unlike 1993’s dubious fashion trends, some things never go out of style. Escape to the beach in a sexy car with the driving rhythm of “Baby Got Back” turned all the way up. Young, old or nicely in between, it’s less than two hours away and exactly what the doctor ordered.
