Girls Without Limits! Returns to Lewis County

This school year Girls Without Limits! will be coming back to Lewis County with an even bigger and more exciting program! Last year GWOL! brought science, technology, engineering, and math to Lewis County with several afterschool day camps and took participants on a Spring Break geocaching adventure through the Chehalis River Basin. This year GWOL! is setting up camp in Lewis County for a series of low/no-cost STEM day camps for girls ages 10-14.

GWOL! camps will bring the program’s exciting hands-on learning experiences, fieldtrips, and STEM mentors to Lewis County one Saturday per month. Girls will have the chance to play with the engineering behind their favorite songs during January’s Science of Sound & Music Camp and become neuroscientists as we experiment with the messages our brain sends our body at February’s Neuroscience Lab. Campers might even bring home some fancy STEM words like “electrophysiology” or “wavelength!”

Girls Without Limits! camps are not only lots of fun, they have the power to transform the entire world of STEM for campers. Just ask Kimberly Perry, the YWCA’s 2015 Young Woman of Achievement, who has been a camp participant and Junior Counselor for eight years. As Kimberly accepted her award and Young Woman of Achievement scholarship earlier this month, she shared the important role GWOL! has played in her life, saying  “I think being a camper, it encouraged me to go into a STEM field…. it showed me that women can really do anything. In male-dominated fields, even.” Girls Without Limits! is working hard to bring these same opportunities to Lewis County girls.

GWOL! will be in town from 10am – 4pm on the third Saturday of the month at the Lewis County Fire District 6 in Chehalis. Girls from Lewis County are also invited to attend the Girls Without Limits! Winter Camp in Olympia, which will have sessions December 21-23 and December 28-30. If you know a girl who loves STEM or who wants to start exploring these fields in a fun and positive environment, these are the camps for her!
